Abstract

This collected volume originates from the three-year international Leverhulme-funded research project Reimagining Italianità: Opera and Musical Culture in Transnational Perspective (University College London, Centre for Transnational History). Its main goal is to examine the different meanings that Italian opera and the idea of operatic italianità took in different social and cultural contexts throughout the nineteenth century, on a global scale. Framed by a long introduction by the volume’s editors and an epilogue by Benjamin Walton, the thirteen chapters it contains focus on individual case studies and follow a multidisciplinary approach aimed at a cultural analysis of the operatic production.
